Today I was poking around in synaptic, when I found the "gnome" package, and to my surprise, it was not installed. Of course, I am running GNOME with Ubuntu 5.10. I figured the Ubuntu developers just hand picked which parts of GNOME to include, but I wanted to see what I was missing out on.

I checked the box, and I had to install about 20 extra packages to complete it, so I already have most of it. (Unlike, say hundreds of packages when installing KDE).

I noticed that I had a few new misc. programs like Abiword, inkscape, dia, gnumeric spreadsheet, and bluefish editor.

That's nice and all, but I also soon found out that it gave me more themes and backgrounds! A couple of the themes I got are pretty cool, and now there a few more installed backgrounds to choose from.

If you're interested, all you have to do is install "gnome" w/ Synaptic or apt-get. For me it was a just a few megabytes on top of a regular Ubuntu install.
