How can I enable "Show what you're listening to" in pidgin

You need a "Now listening" plugin. One I have used is musictracker: http://code.google.com/p/musictracker/.

The thing about musictracker is that it will work, but it shows the artist/track as part of your screen name instead of your status. Ensure that it's enabled in Tools...Plugins.

This has worked very well for me. It gives the artist and track information as the status and automatically changes, just like iChat/iTunes on OSX!

Try to install pidgin-mpris maybe it works.
