Never tried anything like this before so I hope it's just something I missed. I wanted to get rid of Windows 98 on my older Toshiba Satellite 2535CDS and install xubuntu to make the computer run better. I was told there would be no problems. The computer was working fine with the Windows system & the hard drive was then wiped with a program named "AUTOCLAVE". I got an Xubuntu 8.10-install/Live CD (PC) from OSDisc.com & started the process. What I got is: [ 0.000000]ACPI: no DMI BIOS year, acpi=force is required to enable ACPI. [ 16.857001] Kernel panic-not syncing: Out of memory and no killable processes... [ 16.857001]
Help!

a quick google search shows this computer will NOT run xubuntu 8.10. i'd suggest puppy linux, or damn small linux. or a fresh install of 98.

If I remember correctly it's a Pentium 1-don't know the speed & the numbers 32 seem to stick in my head!?! How would I get that info now that the Windows OS has been removed? I looked at the User Guide but it just covers the basics & nothing specific to this, particular, computer.

Thanks for your help. I'll try a lighter version of Linux. Is there really a "puppy" version? I would like to start with some version of Linux & I was told Ubuntu would be the way to go & Xubuntu was the lite one for older computers. If there is an Ubuntu version that you think would work on this machine just name it & I'll give it a try-Thanks again!

you have to understand that yes xubuntu was designed for somewhat under powered computers. there's a limit on just how old and light (lite is a word invented by the diet industry) you can go. i'm not sure what your goal is with this antique. but if you're wanting to learn linux, you should consider using a newer more powerful computer.

I dragged it out of my closet hoping it would be a learning platform for an alternative OS. I'll just put win98 back on it & sell it on eBay for - whatever. Antique!?! Now my Atari 1040ST is jealous. Sorry about the lite thing. I sit corrected.
