Hi Eatdrums, welcome to the forums! The "5" in Ubuntu 5.10 stands for 2005, so that release is no longer supported. I would recommend backing up any important files, then doing a fresh install of 8.10 (the current version, which will be supported through April 2010) or 8.04 (the current long-term-support version, supported through April 2011).

The Ubuntu download is a single .iso file. You should burn this file to a CD using the "burn image" feature available in most burning applications. Then, reboot your computer from that CD. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

Which file/s exactly for 8.10 have you downloaded?

The version number such as 8.10 represents the year (2008) and month (October being 10th month).

Your computer meets the minimum specs for Ubuntu 8.10. I would personally recommend upgrading your ram to 512mb if possible. Good luck!

The problem is that 5.10 is no longer supported. This means you will not receive any security updates, and you may find it difficult to install new software applications.

Use whatever CD burning app you have.

Do you have a CD burner?

I can't remember what 5.10 came with, try right clicking the iso file.

It is great to know that the 5.10 install went well. In a machine such as yours it probably installed fairly quickly too?
The version reference of 5.10 means that the CD was produced from the October 2005 release. New versions are made available every 6 months, so you see that 2005 was a lot of versions ago! The biggest factor is that after 18 months the version will not find any security updates availbale - no further support

Upgrades can generally be done from one version to the next, but not jumping over versions.

So if you have an 8.04.1 CD (or image file to burn a CD) you can install it afresh, and next time, you can upgrade it without a reinstall. In fact 8.04.1 is one of the specials - 'long term support' - and is supported for 3 years, twice as long as the normal versions.

There is also a version 8.10 although this is not long term support.

the file that you will want to burn to CD is
ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso
and it sounds like you have already downloaded this one.

From reasonable guesses:
Put a blank new CD into the CD burner drive and hopefully the CD will be recognised after a few seconds. I believe that if you navigate to the place where the iso file resides, and right-click on it, hopefully you will see an option to burn image to CD.

More exactly, I am trying to find or download a 5.10 iso to burn and try out to help confirm the detail, but this may take a bit of time yet.
In the meantime, you might find a solution.

By the way:
When you reinstall with a recent version, use the option to completely take over the whole drive, do not try to resize the existing 5.10 version, it will get too complex and 5.10 is now not very useful.
