SPDIF nightmare

Hi everyone. I need your help. I'm trying to get digital stereo sound through an Echo Mia MIDI spdif output. I'm using a zero dac.

The Echo console shows there's digital signal going out and all devices work properly (I've checked them all), but there's no sound at all.

So the question is: is it enough to connect the spdif output to the dac to get music or should I use some kind of codec?
