At home I have a desktop that has Windows on it and a 17" Dell laptop that runs Ubuntu. I usually leave my laptop on the kitchen table for convenience.
I usually find that I leave it on for extended periods of time.
Is this ok to do?
I have heard conflicting stories about leaving desktops running.
Some say constantly shutting down and booting up can be problematic.
Should I worry about the same thing with my laptop?

The only specific concern I would have is heat-related. Either be sure to keep the CPU running at a reduced rate or put a notebook cooler under the unit.

Standby completely shuts off the CPU, only the RAM is kept up for resume.
Anywho, I have probably have had my laptop running for a day or somewhere around there, but with a cooler so it was all good.

I don't believe so. The word "completely shuts off" is not so true. If it's off, then the RAM would have not been able to keep the stored data.
