Stay within the board rules, no matter how hot you may believe the wallpaper/screen shot to be.

If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.

Off Topic Posts will be edited or removed.

The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post explicit or suggestive, and provocative images (they must be safe for your kids and/or boss to see). Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.

The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Rule set.

Please use reduced-size thumbnails, where possible, out of respect for people running on lower bandwidth or screen resolutions.

To avoid having users having to ask you for them. we request that you format your posts in the following order:

Starting the new year with a new window manager.

e17 on Xubuntu 8.10, cthulhain theme, trayer (lower right), wallpaper from Deviant art (a link in the December thread).

If I can get it themed the way I want, I may stay with e17 for a while.

that looks great

i used elive as my main OS for about 6 months and i was incredibly satisfied with e17

it offers the best of both worlds..

This is my wmii desktop. I have aimed for complete color synchrony, and it looks rather good. I find KDE apps to be better than the DE, which is quite ironic. I have also switched my file manager from PCManFM to Konqueror, and my terminal emulator from sakura to Konsole.

It's a modded version of Ciano, even more recent than the version I have on my drop.io account. And it does rely on Murrina SVN. That said, I can upload this newer version if you wish. :)

EDIT: And the window manager theme is just a regular Metacity. It's called Earl.

Are you sure the most recent version doesn't produce the same effect on your side? Currently, somewhere on the top of the gtkrc file, the theme states:

GtkMenuBar::shadow_type = GTK_SHADOW_NONE
#GtkToolbar::shadow_type = GTK_SHADOW_NONE

If you enable the second line again, it will produce a completely flat look, both on the toolbar and on the menubar. Or it should.

The theme is currently supposed to have a gradient on the toolbar, while it blends with the menubar. However, now I noticed that it does not blend at all with the menu with this latest SVN revision (it took me a while to notice because I use GlobalMenu). I'm trying to fix that.

But meanwhile, yeah, going all flat is fine too.

It is not defaulted to 29 pixels, but the fact that:

style "panel" {
xthickness = 3
ythickness = 3

...on lines 325-327 of the gtkrc file seems to create huge borders around the buttons. This is another issue I wasn't noticing because I'm using a custom background for the panels on GNOME, and that makes the panels look slimmer. That said, if you reduce those thickness values to 1, it should be enough.

This is a shot from my netbook.

Gnome with no bottom panel or dock. It's purely [alt] [tab] and custom key driven.

Emerald Theme- I customized the old beryl theme and added some features.
gtk2 theme- Gnome colors. By far my favorite theme. It looks perfect and rivals osx in polish.

icon theme- gnome colors wise. I have the red gnome colors icon set for root so I can easily see when I'm in root mode.

using un-antialiased msttcore fonts. I used the base rules from sharpfonts.com and added a few extra for other fonts.

compiz fusion is enabled with some custom effects and many custom key bindings.

Just wanted to say I updated CianoSmooth (check my drop.io), and it seems the bugs are gone. I am keeping the toolbar gradient, but this time the theme should not present any odd lines between the toolbar itself and the menubar. Also, as you can see, the panel's size is reasonable even when there is no panel background applied. From what I think I learnt, writing a specific x/ythickness for the panel style is problematic by itself, so I just removed those lines altogether.

I've been wondering for a while, where do you get that menu icon in your panel? And can I use it without using whatever theme it comes with? (assuming it comes with a theme). I've seen it on a few peoples desktops, and it's a lot pretty than the default or shiki-colors.

It's the mashup menu icon. Replace the original in your icon theme with this one and that should cover it. The icon themes are in the .icons folder in your home folder.

Since people kept complaining about my system being, "too dark", "too small" (referring to my 7pt fonts), and, "too weird", I figured I'd be more diplomatic than simply saying, "fine, use your own damn computer, then".

Turns out the hacks I've done to the menu entires has screwed it up a bit for other users.

Details in screenshot. A couple things I need to do/fix:

1) terminal/irssi is too close to the top and left.
2) temp in conky (still) doesn't work. keep forgetting to fix it.
3) i'm not sure if you can even do this, but I'd like to add padding to the sides of the panel so the menu icon isn't so close to the edge.

Hopefully I can get all this done. :P

Looks like you need to use gtk-theme-switch or gtk-chtheme or (my favorite) lxappearance, to configure your GTK theme. Unless, that is, you just like the default one. For that matter, you could just manually configure your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file. It's pretty straightforward.

Example:
gtk-theme-name="Aurora"
gtk-icon-theme-name="Eikon"
gtk-font-name="Verdana 10"
gtk-toolbar-style=2

KDE4 with Raphsody theme.

Very funky.

Question about KDE4.x: where can I find details of requirements for running the accelerated compositing?

I remember when I tried 4.1, as well as being extremely crash-happy, it wouldn't give me accelerated compositing, instead falling back to the un-accelerated xorg composite extension.

I'm running the open source ATi drivers for my Radeon 9550. Have direct rendering and texture_from_pixmap (though apparently not in a, "direct rendering context", so compiz falls back to indirect rendering).

Wallpaper: My Camera (a photo shot from behind my house)
Programs: 7zip (With Gui using Wine:p)
Icons: http://www.silvestre.com.ar/ (Look under download link for sep 3 I think) (Dropline NOU) , Rest are defaults
Gui Ect: Ubuntu Studio + a combination of other older ones from http://art.gnome.org/

Looks like you need to use gtk-theme-switch or gtk-chtheme or (my favorite) lxappearance, to configure your GTK theme. Unless, that is, you just like the default one. For that matter, you could just manually configure your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file. It's pretty straightforward.

Example:
gtk-theme-name="Aurora"
gtk-icon-theme-name="Eikon"
gtk-font-name="Verdana 10"
gtk-toolbar-style=2

I'm still messing around with that -- using gtk-chtheme and hand edits-- as I learn the ins and outs of E17.

Kwin's composition effects under KDE 4.1 didn't work well for me, either. I'm currently using the 4.2 beta and it has greatly improved.

I'm using an r300-based ATI card and the open-source drivers, as well. So I'd assume you meet the requirements.

You might find this how-to (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver) or this one (http://websvn.kde.org/*checkout*/trunk/KDE/kdebase/workspace/kwin/COMPOSITE_HOWTO) helpful. According to this (http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KWin/HW#ATI_Radeon_9550_.28r350.29), [the Radeon 9550] works with XRender and TFP. Doesn't work with SHM. I have no idea what "SHM" is. There is a GPU-Performance guide (http://userbase.kde.org/GPU-Performance), but it mainly covers nVidia currently.

I had to tweak xorg.conf a bit to get composition effects working smoothly. Enabling EXA from XAA helped quite noticeably.

So I've been spending too much time on my desktop in the last few days
(Former desktop (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6484116&postcount=98))

I've switched to cairo-dock from AWN, changed the wallpaper to Tequila Sunrise (http://www.skinbase.org/rate.php?skins=45375), and messed around with the files to the SlicknesS theme.

I'm still working on conky. I want to make it more readable, which might mean I need to use a background for it. I'm open to suggestions ;)

Okay so I've got KDE4.2 Beta 2 running and running pretty well with 3D effects and all - now how do I get rid of the menu and mouseover delays?

Qt4config allowed me to change the number of milliseconds before menus appear, etc. However, I can't find these options in KDE4's "System Settings".

That's really slick.

Thanks. I had to modify Tenr's smallblue Fluxbox theme (which closely matches the old Mist colors) so that the colors were right for the current Mist engine. I had to do the same to the Gkrellm Mist theme. I also had to expand the krell graphics so that the meters were wide enough for the width I use with Gkrellm (100 pixels wide). The original graphics would leave a gap on the left hand side of the meters.

Yep, Cimi started developping Murrine again!!! :D And there have been almost daily revisions, too.
There is now a new option to change the style of the progressbars. It's the progressbarstyle:

progressbarstyle 0 = nothing, 1 = striped, 2 = cells

As for the list of the new features, I have no idea where to find it. Perhaps I'm just too lazy. What I usually do is to observe others' themes and then try my luck.

Where did you find the new Murrine SVN?

Well, in the same place as usual. I basically pull a SVN snapshot and compile it.

svn checkout http://svn.gnome.org/svn/murrine/trunk/ murrine
cd murrine
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --enable-animation
make
sudo make install

However, Cygoku on the Gnome-look.org website has also been posting .DEB packages for Ubuntu Intrepid. It has been updated everytime a new revision comes out: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Murrine+Gtk2+Engine+DEB?content=96422

Where does it say this has to be Linux/ubuntu screenshots. This is Community Cafe, not a Ubuntu/Linux specific forum section. Also the point of posting a stock osx leopard screenshot is because it is my desktop (no matter if it is stock) and this is the desktop screenshot thread. Make sense.

It doesn't, but if you didn't do anything to customize it you can just say "I use stock Leopard" and leave it at that. The idea here is that we can all pull ideas from one another and figure out the best possible desktop for each of us. A stock Leopard shot is pointless because it's... stock. You didn't do anything. It's like if this was a Photoshop thread and you just put up a picture you took.

Boy, almost forgot about this stuff. Well then.

GTK: KupoFinale Light
OpenBox: BlueSmoke
Icons: Oxy-Gnome
Wallpaper: Got it off The Google
Desktop font: Artwiz's Snap
Conky font: Artwiz's Nu
Pypanel
What music player is that? If it's Quod Libet, which interface?

It doesn't, but if you didn't do anything to customize it you can just say "I use stock Leopard" and leave it at that. The idea here is that we can all pull ideas from one another and figure out the best possible desktop for each of us. A stock Leopard shot is pointless because it's... stock. You didn't do anything. It's like if this was a Photoshop thread and you just put up a picture you took. It's more than just stock desktops that are boring but that's not really the exclusive point. I also enjoy seeing desktops to get an idea of how people use their desktops but more than anything, these threads are about gratuitous ego-stroking. Which is why I post a shot at least once a week.

But it's easier to edit those. One file wouldn't be so clear as separate conkies are.Yeah, I went through hell getting my conkyrss setup working. Frankly, I think it was worth the 6mb of saved RAM but each to their own.

Your htop color scheme reminds me of the old Borland editors. Ahhh, good times. :D

Cool conkies (conkys?) but couldn't you have done that with one conky file? Correct me if I'm wrong - I don't doubt that constraining it's vertical size could have been difficult.

Thanks

Yea, you're right. I think the offset variable allows for multiple scripts in a single file. I opted for the easy route (I think) to get the height and widths setup quickly. My plan was to have it all in one nice tidy package eventually.

I'm still working on conky. I want to make it more readable, which might mean I need to use a background for it. I'm open to suggestions ;)

That's one cool desktop!
