8.10 upgrade problem

On my laptop I had WinXP, Vista, and Ubuntu 8.04. All working harmoniously with each other. I tried to upgrade to 8.10 and now have this problem.

WinXP and Vista still work fine but when I try to launch Ubuntu I get to the login screen and after entering my name and password it hangs. It's not frozen, the mouse still moves but it hangs at a blank screen.

I have the Live CD and would like to know if there is command I can run to check and fix the install.:confused:

press ctr+alt+f1, at the prompt
sudo apt-get remove compiz, followed by
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core

[UnFi]

I had to run "dpkg something something -a" after but that worked!!
