Many of you might not have this issue, but i live in the country and the only reasonably priced form of internet comes as dialup. There really is no easy way to get a hold of the package and its dependencies if you want to download the files at a school or work computer onto a flash drive to take home to install until now. I have been working on Keryx (http://keryx.betaserver.org) which some of you may have seen in the January 2009's Linux Journal.

I'd just like to help get the word out so that users that have dialup or no internet at all can feel much better about getting updates and new applications for their computer. Give it a shot and let me know if you like it, improvements or bugs (there wouldn't be any of those would there :o)

I just released a new version today that uses wxWidgets. Unfortunately this means you will need to install 4 packages on Ubuntu before you can use the interface but soon I will be making an executable so you don't have to worry about this. :)

Hope you like it!

Chris

Keryx is spreading! Help spread the disease! ( maybe thats the wrong word for it :P )

Yeah i think a deb package would be useful as well. I will get working on it soon. :)

Keryx will also be released on www.PortableApps.com with a fully compatible launcher with the PortableApps platform.

A friend just wrote a tutorial on Keryx and its starting to make its rounds around the internet. I suggest you check it out if you are interested in the project at all. He goes through every step of using Keryx to download all 200+ updates for a fresh installation of Ubuntu on an offline computer and uses the packages Keyrx gathers to update his machine in a breeze.

Keryx could use the publicity, if you like the tutorial/project, please vote up on any of these sites since the project is still fairly unknown right now. I need your help!

This looks like a great project. I wish I had it when I was stuck on dialup.

I don't believe this, I just had this idea last night and now someone has done it. This happens to me alot, I think... " now this would be a cool idea" and then before you know it someone else does it. I think someone has my brain bugged. lol

But in all seriousness thanks for your work on this, i will put it to good use. :D

Cool idea, well thought idea, well polished(as you finished the idea!).
Congrats and may Linux spread through the lands where internet is as scarce as it could possibly be.
