heya
I just attempted to install ubuntu onto my desktop, had a 8.10 server disk laying around so I used that. Worked fine for console mode, used apt-get ubuntu-desktop, everything installed. Now, whenever I attempt to boot into gnome, after the ubuntu load screen, I just get a black screen. Won't do anything. CTRL+ALT+F2 seems to work to dump me into console mode, and I can use it fine that way, although a UI would really be preferred.
I also tried to download the desktop version (the normal installer), and whenever I try to boot from disk, the display has the same issues. After selecting "Install to disk" the loading bar completes and then it dumps to a black screen.
Hardware is as follows:
Opteron 165
Epox 9npa+ sli nforce 4 mobo
ati 3870
It's kind of weird because I had ubuntu on this setup before with no issues though. Also, when I try to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it's an empty file.
I doubt that the vidcard is bad, I just had XP on the system and was playing CoD4 without issues like 20 minutes before the format. I guess you never know though, but I don't really have any spare vidcards to swap with to check.
Any help would be lovely :D
