Persistent Read-Only USB

Hello everyone.

I am quite new to Linux and, like probably the majority of beginners, I chose Ubuntu as my first distribution.

I've got all my drivers up and running and successfully installed.

I used the USB creator to install the Ubuntu Live version onto a USB. Now this works absolutely great, all my settings and files are stored as I expected them to, but there's just one thing:

When booting Ubuntu, (I used a modified syslinux.cfg to allow persistent parameters). I have a couple of options:

Run Ubuntu persistently
Run Ubuntu without saving changes
...and couple of irrelevant ones

I always choose 'Run Ubuntu persistently' because it saves my changes. But I would prefer an option that would not save the changes but still read from my persistent settings/files. So basically a read-only persistent boot.

Is this possible?

'Run Ubuntu without saving changes' boots a fresh copy of Ubuntu, as it was when using a live CD. But I would love to have a read-only boot using my persistent settings/files. This is mainly to revert all changes I could possible make, since I'm new to Linux I don't want to mess up my installation when learning new commands etc.

Perhaps there's a boot parameter or a syslinux.cfg file that allows this?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
