Can't increase screen resolution to 1024x768

I can't get xorg to work with my monitor at 1024x768 even though the monitor supports it. I've tried adding the mode into xorg.conf and that doesn't work.

Worse still I can't get the nvidia driver to work with any other resolution apart from 640x480

Any suggestions?
