8.10 perl-base update error

Using the Update Manager I was installing various updates but it seems to have failed when updating perl-base. Now I can't update anything as the whole update process is stalled until I can fix this prolem. Below is the erorr report.

dpkg: error processing perl-base (--configure):
package perl-base is not ready for configuration
cannot configure (current status `triggers-awaited')
Errors were encountered while processing:
perl-base
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

From a terminal (Applications>Accessories>Terminal) what is the output to

sudo apt-get -f installand

sudo dpkg --configure -a
