Hey, new to the forums, hey everyone.
I've been using windows XP for .. lets say, a long time.
Yeah, Vista sucks, sucks so much I needn't prove how it sucks.
Considering I don't game much on my computer, and since I'm hooked to my ps3 and xbox 360, thought I might install Ubuntu.
One thing first, theres no age limit for registering here is there?
I'm alot younger that you think I am (So don't let my almost perfect grammar and intelligence fool you!)
I've liked Ubuntu ever since I first discovered it, but because I am more of a gamer , I kept XP installed.
Second thing, Kubuntu or Ubuntu?
Whats the difference?
So, hello everyone.

.nathan, but call me nath

Hi and welcome

AFAIK there is no age limit here

ubuntu vs kubuntu is purely a matter of which you prefer. You will find strong preferences for each here, but the truth is that each merely "fronts" the same engine, so just try them both ("liveCD?) and go with whichever suits you better or both if you like.

Welcome to the forum and to ubuntu or kubutu whichever you decide. AS posted above it's mostly a matter of taste so try them both and decide for yourself which you prefer.

Considering I only have ubuntu 7.04 on disc (Took about 3 weeks to arrive) I may as well install that and update it.

Greetings and welcome!
Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop environment while Kubuntu uses the KDE desktop environment. Do some image searches for them to see the difference. You can install either of the systems, or both desktop environments on the same system!

Have fun :)

You can download it you know, right? A clean install is better than installing then upgrading.

Ubuntu 7.04 is no longer supported, and once installed, you will find that the repositories no longer work. I have to upgrade 2 systems here on my network that use 7.04

Welcome Nath,
Good luck on your adventures with GNU/Linux, whatever flavor you choose.

They both use different graphical environments but are the same underlying system. Every package in Kubuntu shares the same repositories as Ubuntu and can work alongside each other by installing the ubuntu-desktop and the kubuntu-desktop packages.

I personally have both installed on my setup and regularly switch between the two using the login screen.

Good luck.....

Oh..
Guess I'l have to download it and burn it to a cd.
Shouldn't take long to do that though, and less updates

Well it seems everyone has welcomed you and so should I so hello.

It also seems 2hot6ft2 was nice and quick on the drw to give you a nice list of quick to know things :).

Now I am going to be that one odd ball lol and suggest you use a different distro like Linux Mint as it might be easier for you to change over.

Or even use PClinuxOS(ofcourse I would hold off on this distro until version 2009 is done).

Anyways, welcome to the forum oh and as for DE's whatever meets your needs.

Hello! I am probably much like you, a young kid, who wanted to try something different. But, you my friend, have the head start. I erased everything by accident, and was alone for a long time, until I finally got things worked out. If I would have found this place before I installed, I would have not messed up. So be warned! Take everything step by step, and I would try to get used to (K)ubuntu before trying to get out, because you will end up a lot better if you stay than if you go...:D

Welcome to the community and best regards,

I have had a little experience with ubuntu before though.
Was planning on installing it on my ps3 too, Whats better than good old gaming on a 32 inch TV? Have my thoughts about some PC games, just thinking if it would be able to play them.
Thanks for the welcome.
As it's almost 3 in the morning I will have to do all this tomorrow.
Even the ubuntu desktop background gradient colour changing feature (Lets just call it UDBGCCF :P) is enough to keep me hooked.

I hear that it doesn't run all that brilliantly on a PS3, largely because of the cell processor, and the fact that the PS3 doesn't have massive amounts of RAM.

And you're right about the time, I hadn't noticed! :p
