I just thought I'd pass this information along.
By using the OpenBox window manager instead of Metacity (Ubuntu's Default Window Manager, if I'm not mistaken), you have the option of reserving screen space. More details here:

On a somewhat separate note, is there some similar way of doing this in Metacity?
