View Full Version : Which flavor of Ubuntu would you use in the new year 2006?

I see there are so many versions of Ubuntu now. It'll be interesting to know which one would people like to use in the coming new year 2006. Please also post the reasons for using the distro. :)

Ubuntu. I'd like to like Kubuntu. Really, I would. KDE's composite manager looks so good, and the KDE is, in general, somewhat shinier. And there are some great KDE apps. But something about their design philosophy drives me, screaming, back into the arms of the Gnome.

I would stick with Ubuntu due to the following:
1. I've used it for over 3 months now, and I'm quite familiar with it.
2. Ubuntu receives more tech-support at forums than Kubuntu.
3. I like the philosophy of humanity! After all this is why we all exist!
However, I'll try my hands on Kubuntu during school's summer vacations! :)
Edit: Interestingly, Kubuntu means "towards humanity" in Bemba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bemba).

Kubuntu, because KDE is kool. ;)
Seriously, I find Gnome harder to configure than KDE. Also Gnome's visual style doesn't suit me. Fortunately, Ubuntu has enough flavours to choose from.
Edit: anil_robo, you should link this thread to Kubuntu-forums as well.

I'll stuck with UBUNTU.
Obviously there are very good reasons:
1- Gnome Interface is far more sleek than KDE, better organized, easier to configure, less "font configuration", everything seems to be in its place. Quality, visual and usage, is better in Gnome.
2- OpenOffice, Gimp, Inkscape and Evolution are Gnome apps, so there's no need to change to another interface where apps won't look desktop-integrated.
3- Philosophy of simplicity deals with all that stuff.
Though there are a lot things to improve. As I haven't found yet for Gnome apps like AutoQ3D, or TaskJuggler. Hope someone comes up with a GTK-Qt wrapper to make KDE apps more Gnomish. And better support for 64bit architectures.

I originally fell in love with Gnome but I like the KDE visuals better. I use a combination of both ubuntu and kubuntu because their is different apps for each and i like the ability to have both.

xubuntu, but i'll probably have kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop (and perhaps E17) on my machine too.
I like the lightness and non-bloatedness of xfce4, but I still want to have the other desktops as backups in case I screw up one desktop, and to check out any progress the others make.

Ill most likely run Ubuntu on my desktop (which is what I chose) and Xubuntu on my laptop. I agree with the other poster in that I really want to like KDE, its much shinier and more fun to look at, and many of the programs I use are KDE programs (amarok, k3b), but the desktop drives me nuts. I dont know why, but for some reason I cant use it for very long without wanting to go back to gnome.

Yes, many people have observed the same, indeed! I'll have to study the psychology behind it sometimes! :P

To be quite honest i don't realy know the difference.
Have been using ubuntu for a few months now and i love it although it has been my first experience with linux.
I have downloaded the kubuntu .iso for my laptop but not yet installed it.
What is the actual difference betweem KDE, EDU and gnome then?
And more specifically what are they?

Ubuntu has been leading this poll so far, by clear majority. The psychology may derive from:
1. warm, brown color scheme
2. Large user base
3. Active and efficient forum (Yay :D)
4. Ease of use (menus, dialog boxes etc logically designed)
5. Default installation just works out of the box in most cases
6. Support for local languages (I wonder how many of us use it)

Ubuntu for sure, KDE is just soooo horribly bloated (just an opinion really) right now (and for some reason wi-fi didn't work with Kubuntu at all) and XFCE is just way too much work to get it to the point where I like it. So yeah Ubuntu all the way :)

If I have to reinstall, I'll stick with Ubuntu and then install FVWM. GNOME is overkill, and I like being able to put thumbnails of iconified apps on my desktop. (I know that Enlightenment 0.16 can do this with some tweaking, but I hate its themes and theme format.)

Ubuntu installs with Gnome by default, and that's what most of use for the first time. Then I tried KDE and found it to look much more shinier than Ubuntu! Every icon started jumping and every click was whistling! It was fun for the first half an hour but then I got lost in its complex menus. I switched back to GNOME in half an hour and uninstalled all KDE components immediately! :D
But I can very well understand - for people who are used to KDE, Gnome is not comfortable!
It's so good that Ubuntu offers so much customizability! You can have gnome, kde, xfce, and dozens more! None of the other big OS companies have this feature! :D

I'm trying to get on old 166mHZ laptop running better than new (when new 'had Win95). XFCE and Ubuntu seem like the best bet, but I've run into a few problems that are hopefully solvable through advice from this forum. I'm becoming curious about running Enlightenment without a desktop environment on top of it; however, "Eubuntu" really won't fly.:???:

I plan to stick with Kubuntu. I have been using it for a few weeks now and love it. I was using Ubuntu before and really liked it was well. I want to try out SuSE.
SuSE is a great distro. i loved KDE on SuSE; used it for a about 6 months till i got some trouble with my laptop, but its actually a problem with the fans in my laptop not SuSE itself. it is a very good distro, with solid support and it just works very well.
i came from SuSE and after my laptop was being stupid i tried out ubuntu and i have been using it for about 2 weeks now. i plan to stick with it for a while, partially because of this community we have going here. it runs great on my laptop and does everything i want it to do. i am very satisified. it is pretty powerful, but at the same time does things with simplicity.

That's relative to what you want to configure, your level of knowledge and how much you'd be willing to get your hands dirty for some tweakability.

apparently no one is 'up' for edubuntu. where are all the kids and teachers
so sorry to type like this but i just discovered the shift, alt, ctrl and caps lock keys on my keyboard have stopped working.
i will really download ubuntu, but will also try out kde, xfce and possibly fluxbox too on that. i tried kde once, but it was too shiny for me. i like the warm muddy color and feel or ubuntu. and the sounds of ubuntu are awesome. whereas kubuntu sounds like a child is playing with his rattle every now and then
i still have no idea what's the idea behind using ide/gnome. i noticed they look different, and that's all i was able to notice.

Ubuntu.
I like the Gnome way of working. I've used KDE in the past, and I thought I would prefer it, but it turns out I like Gnome better.
The first thing I did was tweak it, though, I'm not too fond of Ubuntus Human theme.
If I get more into Scribus, I might switch to KDE, though, for better integration.

Kubuntu all the way most probably. Gnome is too dumbed down and full of very small but very annoying glitches. KDE 3.5 is also faster on my machine with all the bloat turned off (yes, you can learn to do that if you just use it for more than 5 minutes). Not to mention all the wonderful KDE apps that just makes life better :p

Going to stick with ubuntu here. I've played around with KDE over FreeBSD, PCBSD and Desktop BSD and just did not like the feel. To blocky, clunky and cartoony for my taste. Gnome for me seemed to be more intuitive and cleaner in its apearance.
Two desktops and a laptop here, all running ubuntu with no problems. For those few little sticking points, the forums have been a wealth of info. So many nice folks willing to contribute fixes and solutions. All one has to do is just read a bit and probably the a solution has already been posted before. :D
Take care and have a Happy New Year everyone.

I think I'm finally happy with Linux now that I've found xfce4. I don't like M$ and want to be free from it, but XP works really well for me. It's fast, stable and the windowing environment is smooth. Moving, resizing and minimizing windows in Gnome is clunky and ugly for me. I've just got xfce4 set up nicely with compositing and it rocks. I have it set so that windows are transparent when I move them and they have well done drop shadows. It looks pretty good with transparency on resize but I prefer turning off redraw while resizing all together. Now everything is smooth. It's simple and fast. So far I've just started but it seems more stable than Gnome has been for me (I'm talking without xcompmgr which is beautiful but slow and even more buggy). I have not had the stability or speed I enjoy with XP. I think xfce is doing it. Can't wait to see what the new file manager is like.

I'll run Ubuntu, but I suppose I will use some of my unpartitioned disk space and give some BSD a try too. Just to see how things are on their side ;)
That Nexenta looked interesting , and I have never used Solaris. I think I'll have to try that too some day. And I'd like to test Symphony OS.. They have some nice new ideas.
But I'm sure while trying all those, I'll feel lucky having Ubuntu on my computer so there's always one OS that just works :D

Have to go with Ubuntu, Tried Kubuntu, loved the blue, but just didn't feel comfortable getting things set up. I think the main reason I like Ubuntu is that when I hit a snag, I come here and someone, somewhere, has an answer. A lot of times as I'm searching for answers to a problem, I find an answer to a problem I haven't even had yet, and that is just fun. Carl

Kubuntu, because I just plain love eye candy and KDE is far superior to Gnome in that department. As far as the support goes, 90% of what is posted for Ubuntu also applies to Kubuntu on this forum. Also the Kubuntu forum usually has what is lacking on this forum, so the better support argument against KDE does not hold weight in my opinion. I am building my new rig on Friday and I will be replacing Suse 10 with Kubuntu. The thing that is swaying me most back to the Ubuntu camp is the great level of support in these forums even if Suse is easier to set up. I know that if I have a problem in the future that I will be more likely to find the answer to my question on this forum instead of being told to Google it or RTFM.

That being said, I also have Ubuntu installed, because I learned Linux in gnome and I'm still learning XFce, so I have the dual environment for now, until I'm comfortable enough to just run XFce. guess I'll switch to ubuntu
kde looks generally nicer (even if doesn't have blended theme), got tons more stuff without getting mad with firefox extension, natilus script and gnome sandwitches... and if you forget gtk you don't have to wait ages to surf the web or write a document in word (cause koffice loads really faster than ooffice)
xfce is generally faster (if you don't open any apps ) clean and spartan and problably I'll love it when I'll manage to make gnome updater work on it
but till now everybody can feel ubuntu developers spent 90% of their time in gnome so why bother with other DE?

Like several of the others on this thread I prefer Kubuntu, but I got it by adding kubuntu-desktop to standard Ubuntu, so I have both on my machine, and occasionally use Ubuntu just to try it again. My love affair with kubuntu is ongoing.
Try as I might, I can't get into gnome. I'm totally computer illiterate, but even I feel like the gnome designers are talking down to me. I like personalizing things and KDE seems to be built with that in mind. Lots of options. Opens your mind. The slight majority of the programs I like and use are KDE. I've seen people put off about how Konqueror browses both local and net, but I think it's great. Keeping with that, it seems like the whole KDE family is geared more towards integration. For example, I have my IM and email clients synced very smoothly with my address book. Maybe things like this are available in gnome, but I couldn't figure it out. Everything seems more walled off... The artistic design is where I notice the most difference. I know themes can be easily changed, but I think you can tell a lot about an organization by what its defaults are. In my very humble opinion gnome looks a bit dated. Sorta flat and colorless like something out of the mid 90s. Admittedly, the KDE defaults are currently a bit too glossy, but that looks like it's changing with next release. That brings me to the future. I haven't been around all that long, so maybe I'm mistaken about this, but KDE seems a little more ambitious. KDE 4 looks like it will be truly innovative and even revolutionary.
Now, I definitely have my complaints with KDE. Takes way too long to open apps. Lacking lots of important software, especially in the art and media areas. Sometimes, the menus do go a little over the top. For example, with kopete, there are 2 menu items that serve the exact same purpose. Sound engine has real problems. The list goes on.
A big part of me would like to use just plain ubuntu, because it definitely seems more polished and it's a lot easier to get gnome help here. Maybe I'll switch eventually.

I've heard things will change since seems Mark Shuttleworth use kde on his system (http://www.kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-commitment.php)

Xubuntu on my desktop; server install with wm2 & a few apps on my desktop (I'm an old FreeBSD hand). Xfce is about as much as I can take in an integrated desktop, but I do like the integration (the way open/save dialogues are consistent over several apps etc.). I can get a lot of work done with Xfce.
Gnome makes me hear Grateful Dead and see Natalie Portman desktops; KDE reminds me of Kraftwerk and polished steel; Xfce reminds me of Gauloises and garlic. Mm-m-m-mh good!
