View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] dpkg/kernel update problem

I've searched for a result to this problem everywhere and can't find it. I'm using Hardy as this prevents me from upgrading.

I recently ran out of space on my /boot folder and just figured out how to clean the /boot/.Trash0 folder to free up some space.

However, this meant that linux-image-2.6.24-22-rt and linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic didn't install properly (I think).

As a result, I've had some troubles on this machine recently. For instance, I need to GRUB menu boot into linux-image-2.6.24-21-generic whenever I want to use my machine.

Another problem is with updates - I updated yesterday with few problems, but now dpkg seems to be broken with no way to fix it.

This is the output from the terminal:
ubuntu@dell:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

It's the infinite loop from hell :(

`/boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.new' existed as a 7.5Mb file, but was completely worthless in Nautilus - it said the file had been recently moved or deleted. I can't uninstall/reinstall it because apt-get is broken.

Please help. Thanks!

Not sure if other have already told you but it's not a good idea to mix one release with another in /etc/apt/sources.list.

You are running hardy but you have some feisty's repos in there.

Can you post the output of the following :

df -h
ls -la /boot/
dpkg -l|grep linux-image
dpkg -l|grep modules|grep linux

I do know about the not mixing repo's, there are no gutsy's in there for instance but I guess I forgot to take out the feisty's.

Here you go. Thank you very much:

Okay, you have quite some space in /boot now, can you do the following :

cd /boot
sudo rm config-2.6.24-22-generic
sudo touch config-2.6.24-22-generic
sudo rm initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt
sudo touch initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt
sudo rm initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.bak
sudo touch initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.bak
sudo dpkg --configure -a

And post any errors.

Okay, thanks.
Weird that you cannot create those files with "touch".
Can you post the output of the following :

mount
uname -a
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
sudo touch /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.new
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-2.6.24-22-rt

This is becoming almost funny at this point. Thank you again for your continual help.

:) No problem.

So you're using kernel 2.6.24-21-generic right now.
Can you please try the following :

sudo dpkg -P --force-all linux-image-2.6.24-22-rt linux-image-2.6.24-22-generic linux-image-2.6.24-21-rt linux-image-2.6.24-19-rt linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-22-rt linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-22-generic linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-21-rt linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-19-rt linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-19-generic

Hopefully that'll work right away.

Okay.
After this, can you run :

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install

And post any errors ?

Well... we're getting closer I think!?

What I don't understand is that

sudo touch /boot/linux-image-some-example-name

gave errors :(

I've even tested it here (with sudo) to be sure.

The touch command should create a file when the file does not exist.
And if the file exists, then it should only update the timestamp on that file and nothing else.

Do you want to continue trying to resolve this problem, or is backing up properly, and doing a fresh install a valid option for you ?

Well I think those files are broken somehow.

I don't really want to reinstall. I've had this setup for 14 months now and this was the first big problem. Apt-get works now and I got into synaptic package manager again (finally) so that issue has been resolved :D

Unfortunately, I have three broken packages - linux-image-generic, linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-22-generic, linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-22-generic - and I'm not sure how to fix them :(.

Still the 'touch' problem.

root@dell:~# touch /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.new
root@dell:~# touch /boot/config-2.6.24-22-generic
touch: cannot touch `/boot/config-2.6.24-22-generic': No such file or directory

Very strange, now one touch command works, the other doesn't.

This is on my machine :

# touch /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.new
# ls -la /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.new
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 2008-12-31 00:20 /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.new

You have enough disk space in / according to your df -h output.
/boot is not a separate partition on your machine.
I didn't see any unusual mount options for your / partitions, although I might have to check again to be sure.

Do you have an Ubuntu Live CD ?
Can you boot with that and then mount your / partition from your hard disk, and then do the following, assuming that in this example your / partition of your hard disk is mounted with mountpoint /media/disk-1 :

sudo touch /media/disk-1/boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-22-rt.new
sudo touch /media/disk-1/boot/config-2.6.24-22-generic

When that does not give an error, please boot again from your working kernel without the Live CD, and perform again the following :

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install

Please post any errors.

FYI boot is a separate partition on my computer, sda3 where the rest of the hard drive is sda6. Will try this - my live CD is Intrepid but I don't think that should cause a problem. Thanks!

Just for kicks I ran fsck on sda3. It fixed some errors. I then tried touching the files even though I hadn't restarted with the Live CD, and they "touched" without an error message! So I ran:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update

and now I have 0 broken packages and it appears the kernel installed successfully.

I am going to restart my computer now, if it goes well I'll [SOLVED] this thread and graciously thank you!
