Someone managed to get a Linux command line going on an iTouch, but nothing could be done because it had no keyboard, for those of you who didn't know.

I've been going over Apple's legal notes when it comes to iPods, and there really isn't anything in the paperwork about running something other than the iTouch/iPhone OSs on the iTouch or iPhone. Now, even though there would be alot of things to kinks to work around such as the iTouch/iPhone hardware and possible legal action taken from Apple but...Could a Linux operating system be plausible on the iTouch/iPhone?

you would have to patch it first. I am not so sure that patching it is legal either. You would have to patch it because of the touch screen, and no keyboard. Other than a couple more tweaks here and there, I am fairly sure that it is possible.:)

Why fight with a giant who doesn't want you doing that on their platform?

With that thinking, would it be to bad for someone to make a Linux-Based Handheld? :P

the only problem with the iphone and linux on iphone is that they have to reverse engineer the hardware. the iphone is a rather standard ARM platform/processor but i'm guessing it was modified by Apple to some extent. if a remember correctly the only problem are the drivers. once you have those in place you can could run ubuntu on it (well maybe not ubuntu but one of the super light distros).
nokia maemo platform could be ported to it or google's android.

what if you write an auto touch keyboard into the kernal to load when it does? bI y the time you need it it will be there
if it's command line as your run your finger accross the screen then the letters change like in a scroll box I don't know it's just an idea I'm stoned LMAO!!

I think people would have a better chance with BSD, no? Anyways, they're all Unix-based, I really don't see the issue. Just need a coder who is motivated.
