i installed vlc and now i have no effin sound

Not sure. Do you experience the same issue if you goto System -> Preferences -> Sound and change Sound Playback to ALSA or PulseAudio (depending on what it's currently set to)? Indeed, changing between them and whacking 'Test' each time, do you get any joy?
