I ordered the 55 pack off of the Ubuntu ShipIt! website, and when it arrived I was charged $11.26 in fees. I really wasn't expecting to get charged for these... I live in BC, Canada.

hmm thats odd, mostly likely the charge was because Shipit negelcted to pay some special handling charges in your area, this understandable on ShipIts part though.

The charges were

Duty Amount: $1.80
GST: $2.23
PST: $2.23
Handling Fee: $5.00

I was really hoping to not have to pay for them, I had to borrow some money from my mom to actually get them from the post office, lol

55 cd's for $11? Sounds like you have nothing to complain about.

Hey folkes first post here, I live in Ottawa Ontario Canada and they sent me 15 of the 32bit cd's and 10 of the 64 bit cd's and they just stuffed them in the mailbox no charges, postal, delivery or anything and thats for 25 CD's, strange. Did you perhaps accidently tell them you wanted priority post or something? like accidently check a box ?

Sometimes you will have to pay customs fees, etc. on the shipment, the website even states this.

is it possible due to the size of the packages? Especially as the two folks who were charged had 55 and 100 cd's respectively, maybe it is due to the extra size/weight?

just a thought

These charges come from customs, and may even depend on which customs officer looks at a package.

On the shipit site it is explained that the value of a cd is declared to be 25 cents. They do that because otherwise customs gets angry or confused :) and assign a value themselves.

Yeah, those charges are from customs. Back in warty, I remember getting 45 cds without paying, and I also live in BC, Canada. So I guess since it was such a large amount, there was custom charges.

On the back of the CBSA/CPC form, you'll find a rejection letter. File that with this as the explanation: http://people.ubuntulinux.org/~mako/ubuntu_cds-customs_letter-generic.pdf

BTW, The offices of the Mississauga Linux Users Group got a delivery today. i was notified and thought "wow, acer actually fixed my laptop quickly for a change" and when i got there I saw a small box with Mississauga Linux Users Group on it - my CD's arrived!!!! No customs fees in Mississauga ON (Fort Erie or Toronto Customs, probably T.O. as it was sent Air)

My friend about a 4 hour drive south of me (same island) ordered a bunch (around 100 I think) CD's and got them with no charges. I'll try filing the rejection letter, thanks :)

When did you get them? I ordered 20 or 25, I'm in BC and still waiting. I'm on the island, which could account for a couple days delay I suppose.

I received 10 CD's free in California.
I've wondered about the economics of this.
Hopefully it's good karma for ubuntu.

Me too. It would be nice if there was an option to pay/donate. AND pay for faster shipping ;) That way people that want to show support can do so in that way, and get the CDs quicker too.

Is that possible?

I guess the G.S.T./P.S.T. are added on top of the brokerage and duty after all, since (25+1.80+5.00) * 0.07 = 2.23.

I'd like to know how Canada Customs determines the duty. HS (Harmonized System) is a classification scheme that the World Customs Organization (http://www.wcoomd.org/ie/index.html) developed. It looks like the classification scheme is closed to public querying and enquiry. However, I searched for 85243910 on the Government of India (http://www.ieport.com/frms/itc-hs.htm) website, and it is classified as a "video disc of educational nature." The APEC Tariff (http://www.apectariff.org/) database may give more information but you need to register. According to the CBSA (http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/general/publications/hcdcs-e.html), it looks like the duty is based on the declared value of the item and its eight-digit HS number. They probably also factor in the country of origin or "Rules of Origin", I'm not sure.
