Hi all,
I'm having some problems with a new LCD monitor (Samsung SyncMaster T220) I bought a couple of weeks ago.
When I boot using the default xorg.conf for Ubuntu 8.10 (which is as good as empty), I get an error saying "screens found, but none have a usable configuration. This brings me to a screen, where I can select "run ubuntu in low graphics mode, and some other options. When I choose this option, it restarts X, and my monitor works fine. It even uses its native resolution (1680*1050).
I have tried several things to solve it myself, like installing the NVidia drivers, and then running nvidia-xconfig, which gives me a more complete xorg.conf, but when I boot after doing this, my screen goes black, and I can see my monitor continuously switching between analog and digital mode.
Some useful information:
This config makes X crash and gives the option menu:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
This gives me a blank screen, where I can here the sound of the login prompt:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"

I've also tried this last one without the modes-section, with the same result.
xorg.0.log (only errors for brevity):
(EE) NV(0): No valid initial configuration found
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Output of lspci | grep 'VGA':
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 8800 GT (rev a2)
I've also tried dpkg-reconfigure somewhere along the way, but that didn't help either.
I have no idea what else I can try, so I hope you guys (and girls) can help me out.
Thanks a lot!
