how reinstall ubuntu 8.04 on 7.10

I have a problem over here where I have installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my hard disk and it could not start as it show a kernel panic syn error. Therefore, i am downloading the 8.04 from the website and would like to overwrite this 7.10. I need an advice whether I should remove this 7.10 and install the 8.10 or just overwrite it. I am also not able to resolve the kernel panic issue on 7.10. Could anyone suggest me a way to uninstall the 7.10 kernel and install a new 8.10? I would really appreciate some steps and commands as I am new to Ubuntu. I really need help. Thanking you guys in advance.

Just install 8.10 on top of 7.10.When,during installation,comes to partitioning delete existing Gutsy partition and on it install Itrepid.I don´t understand why did you made poll for this question.
