hi,
i need some help please.
i have a pentium 3 computer with 384mb of ram and a 9 gig hard drive. i have windows 2k OS on it. it seems to have some sort of virus and i cant get rid of it no matter how i tried. the bottom line is i got all my data off the computer and want to get rid of windows and install ubuntu.
i received my ubuntu disks in the mail. i have both including the 64 bit.
my question and goal is very straightforward. i want to clean out/reformat my hard drive to get rid of windows, viruses and everything else. i then want to install ubuntu.
can someone here please provide a step by step tutorial on how to do this?
thank you.

boot with the live cd, use the" try Ubuntu" choice first to test your hardware. before you transfer your data to ubuntu make sure is virus free
then run the installation from the live cd, choose the "use entire disk" option in the partitioning screen.

Formatting the disk should be enough, unless you have some boot sector virus.

try this guide:

In my opinion its is better to Dualboot,Dualbooting lets you keep both windows and linux on your machine.

To Dualboot, you have install windows first and also leave some space for linux...this is the safest way to daulboot, the other is use pation software like QTparted...

Or

If you want to erase windows, and just put linux on your system, then you would just have to reformat the hardrive so the only thing that will be on there is linux. In your case you have already done it:

šhe bottom line is i got all my data off the computer and want to get rid of windows and install ubuntuš

Now all you have to do is install that špenguinš into your computer...

first of all,the disk that you have recived, are there alternative cds(youŽll notice the command-like setup when you boot up from it),or a live cd(boots up Ubuntu from the cd)?

hi,
i read the tutorial but it is not specific as to it removing windows or reformatting tyhe hard drive or not. keep in mind i may have viruses on there so i have to get rid of them. does the ubuntu cd's automatically reformat the harddrive?
how does the harddrive get reformated before ubuntu installs? please explain.

if you choose the 'guided--use entire disk' partitioning option, the ubuntu installer will wipe/format the entire drive. Trust me--any viruses will be gone forever.

There's also Dban (http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.dban.org/&sa=X&oi=revisions_result&resnum=1&ct=result&cd=1&usg=AFQjCNESJVRrZTBSROf4m-sZnW0okWltHg) if you're really paranoid
