My fiance bought me an HP mini for xmas, loving it!!!

It came with XP, but I have fallen in love with linux (Ubuntu 8.04 to be specific) on my old laptop. I have been searching around to see how easy I can install 8.04 to the mini because I do not have a cd drive. The best I can come up with is to install it to a jump drive (with 1 gig or more), use a persistence mode, and run Ubuntu from the jump. Is this the best way? If I do that, can I still use compiz? If this is the best way, what is the easiest way to perform this install? I have found 2 or 3 suggested methods.

On a side note, is there a mobile ubuntu? Is there a better distro that is as easy to use as Ubuntu, but better for a mini netbook?

Thanks!!!
