I have been trying to install Ubuntu on my advent 5312 for the past few weeks but every time it gets to the screen with the orange loading bar and the Ubuntu logo, it freezes. I have tried the alternate install disc aswell as the live cd both of which have worked fine on another machine. Any tips?

I think you have less RAM, like 256 . Right ?

I reckon hardware specification is not an issue. Is it a new machine? Any chance the CD ROM is dirty?

Try boot using USB or other variants like Xubuntu or Kubuntu.

my system also freezes when trying to install. i boot up from cd as normal then i get asked what language. i pick english. then when i pick install the orange bar starts and goes by that no problem. its the next stage thats the problem for me. i see the ubuntu desktop background then a blank white window appears. its the window where you start your installation progress. but its just blank and my mouse freezes.

my system specs are amd sempron
512 mb ram
not sure about the graphics . its intregrated not a graphics card.
20 gb ide hard drive

whats causing this?

i forgot to say as well the disc works on every other system ive tried it on. and also my system works ok with ubuntu 8.04. it also froze when i tried to install mint. same thing again.
