volume dead after installation of mplayer

yesterday when i tried to install mplayer i couldnot find it working properly so uninstalled it.surprisingly now my all other players do not give normal volume.the max soung settings give barely audible output.how can i correct it?

Double click your volume icon and make sure PCM is up.
