Hi,

I am new to Ubuntu and really don't know too much about it other then what I have read on various websites. I am intrigued by it and have decided to give it a go and have a look.

I am currently running Vista and was wondering where I should get started in regards to preparing to install, installing etc.

Cheers,

Vlasta

Would you recommend installing it?

have you run the live cd yet? did you like it? did everything work? if so, sure install it. do you want to dual boot, or erase windows?

If I erase windows am i able to restore it at a later date? What would you suggest?

I suggest u try Ubuntu in dual mode first till ur comfortable with it and believe me u'll never want to go back to Windows again.

Try installing with WUBI which lets u install Ubuntu as if it were a Windows application. Removing Ubuntu is as easy as uninstalling an application from Add/Remove Programs.

I think that dual booot is a good start.Of course you will first run live Cd to see that all works properly, and after that install it.Here (http://psychocats.s465.sureserver.com/ubuntu/dualboot) is a good guide for dual boot install. If you have any more questions just ask.

I bought new computer preinstalled with Vista. I liked it soooo much that I installed Hardy (8.04.1). I love it. Wiped Vista.

If you have the Vista disk you can wipe Vista and reinstall later. You will find that installing Ubuntu is a lot easier than installing Vista.

Dual booting or putting UBuntu on another HDD and switching them is an easier route.

This is a different OS and you will have a lot to learn. I am now dual booting Hardy/Hardy so that I have one to use and one to screw up. When installing something new or doing something new I try it on my "experimental" install before doing it sto the "real" one. That way I can use the box without worrying about loosing stuff. Makes the wife happy too.

Have fun.
