I think it's called compiz-fusion now. If you enable a driver for your card, you should be able to run compiz since it's installed as default.
What graphic card do you have?

Apart from as previously said (It's Compiz Fusion now), yes, there's often a way to avoid the terminal altogether.

Compiz Fusion. I downloaded and installed it from Synaptic. What do I do now?

Which release are you running? It should already install so all you have to do is install a driver for your graphic card. Does your graphic card even show up in System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers?

It would really help if you told us what it is that you want to do. To get basic effects right-click on your desktop and click Change Desktop Backgrounds-->Visual Effects. This will give you the ability to have wobbly windows and set up transparent terminals. See screenshot.
For more effects you will have to install compizconfig-settings-manager, it is available for installation using Synaptic Package Manager.
To help us answer your questions better have a look here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToGetHelp), before asking any questions.

It doesn't show up. The only thing I have in hardware drivers is my wireless card.

Are you able to get the basic effects using the method jim (cariboo907) suggests?
