I reinstalled the grub as per the instructions above and the grub would run when I booted from the external but the only options in the grub menu were 7.10 kernels when I tried to select any of them I just got a error 17.
I then tried a complete reinstall, taking care to go into the advanced settings and select the correct partition (dev/sdc2) for the boot loader but the same thing happened with the grub (only 7.10 kernels).
So that's where I'm at!!
