If the XP is in a virtual machine (eg in VirtualBox or Qemu), it will still need antivirus. It won't be nearly as easy for hackers to break into it (take it from one who's tried) but virii can still get into it via infected .exe and .dll files. I recommend AVG Free. I use that on XP myself.

AVAST is another good "Free" Anti-Virus you can get and there is a version for both Windows & Ubuntu...

I used AVG since it first came out but when it got to around 7.xx or 8.xx I started having problems with it so I went with AVAST...

when i had XP as primary OS, i had best AV Bitdefender TS 2009 which was proportionally heavy on primary memory but now i require lite AV, isn't it?

I dont know how safe you will be running XP under Ubuntu in terms of threats. But I run XP as part of my dual boot (I know not the same). I would recommend these programs for absolute safety (never been infected by a virus or etc); Threatfire, Bitdefender Anti-Virus, and Comodo Firewall.
