View Full Version : [ubuntu] How do I save settings/packages for install with Live CD?

I have a laptop (Compaq Presario M2010US) which I use in the livingroom. It is a laptop I'm borrowing from work and it has Windows on it. I'm using the live CD for 8.10. The wireless on it requires a special driver, which isn't a problem -- if I have internet access. So I move the laptop to my home office and plug it into the wired internet. The install happens fine, and boom, I have wireless. However, I must do this every time I turn the machine on. Leaving it on works fine until something happens for which I have to reset.

I want to be able to do this without having to move the computer into the office to plug it in. I need a way to either (1) install the driver from a USB thumb drive, presumably after having downloaded it the first time, or (2) save the settings and installed packages on a thumb drive so that they get loaded the next time the computer starts.

I have also considered creating a live USB thumb drive, but the laptop will not boot from a thumb drive.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you install 8.10?

I agree that is a better solution; unfortunately it's not an option.

I dug around a little more and I think I've answered my own question:

Testing now...

Doesn't seem to work. That first page doesn't list Intrepid as one of the versions where the persistence works. I'll continue testing.

Why not an option installing 8.10? And how is your experimentation progressing?
