I'm passing this on as a tip for anyone who finds him/herself in the same situation I ran into this afternoon. I was installing Ubuntu 8.10 (AMD-64) on a new HP laptop, and the loader got stuck less than a minute into the process, with the little rectangle that rolls back and forth just sitting there. By strange but fortunate chance, I accidentally tapped the Ctrl key and the little orange rectangle jumped forward a millimeter or so, then stopped again. Tapped the key again. Box jumped forward a tiny bit more. Did this a few more times. So I decided to just sit on that key for a while, and the installation decided it was going to work after all. Didn't have to keep the key down for long, maybe 30 seconds or so.

Hope this is useful for someone else.
