Where technical considerations are paramount, open source will usually win out.

Proprietary software has marketing muscle though, so open source tends to make less headway among consumers.

I'd rather see the DoD and all the military branches -- heck, the whole of the government -- use open source instead of any proprietary solutions. It's more stable, it's peer-reviewed, it's open-ended, it won't be nearly as likely to trap your data in an obsolete format, etc. and so forth.
