View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Is there a file that the graphical login must use?

My wife upgraded to Intrepid but now, she can only log in the command line.
She can get to the gdm screen (well xdm now that I had her install xubuntu-desktop) but she can't log in there.

I am SSH'ing her computer half the world away and i was able to do some updates, but I don't know what file I am looking for.

What file does the graphical log in need that the console does not?

Any ideas?

If any other info is needed, let me know. (ssh'ing right now)

Adam

I just got this text from her: "There is a text box its just as if they keyboard is not working because you can click in the box but when you hit the keys they do not show up in the box"

I compared her xorg with mine (both laptops). Hers has a keyboard in it. Mine does not? Was that a change from Hardy to Intrepid? Should I re-run the command to make the xorg remotely? Not sure if that will mess it up

Here is her xorg.conf

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Ok, so I went ahead and did
[CODE}sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg[/CODE]

Is there anyway to test if her keyboard is working over ssh? I was thinking about trying X over ssh, but then it would be my keyboard and not hers.

Adam

Now her xorg has only a
Device - Configured Video device
Monitor - Configured Monitor
Screen - Default screen (with links to monitor and device)

](*,) She keeps threatening to go back to windows...bah dang her.

Not sure what I did.

I did update and uprade and one of the upgrades was xorg and it now works.

I tried reconfiguring xserver and tried looking for differences with a buddies Hardy install. Luckily it ended up having the xorg update.

I guess I can suggest to reinstall xorg and see if that fixes anything.

One other thing, not sure if it was fixed before or after I added backports as I was ssh'ing and my wife didn't log on until a few hours later and I had given up. hah
