I'm looking to have a command line only ubuntu with all of the synaptic and apt-get stuff installed, but nothing actually installed...like a gentoo of the ubuntu world I suppose

I just want to build my own-buntu, and I want to be able to do it on a very small drive

any replies would help

You should read the article here: http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20081215

While your goal isn't the same as the author's, the means might be similar... The 1st steps of the install should be what you are looking for...

You could also do a minimal install.

ah, here we go, I found unetbootin and will do a net install, I'm sure I can do a very minimalist install from that
