Well, I recently bought this (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-ST31000340AS-Barracuda-Cache-8-5MS/dp/B000UC3CN0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1229803742&sr=8-1) internal HDD, and I do not know what peripherals I need to install it properly.

So does anyone know what additional peripherals, hardware, or cords are required for this to be installed? I have a HDD storage bay inside my computer, so enclosures are not an issue.

You will need
1. A SATA cable (http://i33.tinypic.com/348g4k4.jpg).
2. An available SATA port (http://images.tomshardware.com/2005/11/23/pc_interfaces_101/sata.jpg) on your motherboard.
3. An available SATA power connector (http://www.askkia.com/articles/images/sata15pin.jpg) or MOLEX (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/31/Molex_female_connector.jpg/800px-Molex_female_connector.jpg) from your power supply. Some drives may require an adapter if you will be using molex.

While the computer is off, open the case and secure the case with four screws (recommended), two on each side. Connect the SATA power or MOLEX, then connect the SATA cable. Plug the other end of the SATA cable into the motherboard. Connect the SATA power / Molex and then you are done. Close it up and power it on and check the BIOS to make sure it is properly recognised.

Since the link was dead for the SATA on the mobo: http://www.answers.com/topic/serial-ata

They are pretty easy to find.

@Grant A.: Can you give us a report on the volume of the drive when it's working.

I'll be in the market for a couple of 1Tb drives after xmas, & a drive like yours would be fine. It is unfortunate that we can't afford the SDDs at the moment & they aren't big enough either. I would pay twice the price of a 1Tb platter & head HDD, for a 1Tb SDD, as I wouldn't need to use 2 SDDs in RAID-1 for data security.

As it stands I think last time I looked I'd be up for approx' $350- aus. for a 250Gb SDD.

By volume you mean data storage, correct?

:lolflag: Sorry, I blew it there, I will disambiguate (I think that's the biggest word I know) my request.

I meant sound volume. I'm interested in how intrusive the drives sound is when it is working hard.

Antidisestablishmentarianism is the biggest word I know.

It's a very quiet drive. No louder than the average case fan.

Yeh, well I should have said that disambiguation is the biggest word that I know the meaning of. :-)

Terrific, thanks for the info'.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is the longest word I know, and I have no idea how loud the 1TB drive is.

Stuff to fill it is going to be hard to come by lol. What use is 1 tb?? I could fit my house collection, my top 10 favorite movies and ALL of family guy and still have space on something that huge!

I agree. I can't imagine filling a 1 TB hard drive [for personal use] easily. Maybe if you're into pirating lots of HD movies, I guess that it's possible, but that's still a ton of space. Or perhaps you just enjoy feeling smug knowing you will never run out of hard drive space? I have a 120 GB hard drive and I have serious doubts that I'll ever use more than half of it in this computer's lifetime.

It's really not that hard to fill 1TB, just takes some time. ;)

HD data sheets usually provide a drives dB rating.
Reviews of HDs usually also include the 'noise factor'.

An up to date table displaying the specifications that matter, for all available models of HDDs, in one place, would be a very handy thing for the computer world to have at its disposal.
