I have always noticed that Ubuntu fonts always look quite big and not as nice as Windows fonts, so I've taken to changing the DPI of the X to 72dpi from the default 96dpi.

Does anyone know why X always seems to be installed at 96dpi when the fonts look far superior and closer to the Windows fonts when dpi is set lower?

I'd be interest if anyone else try changing to 72dpi and see if they think its better? Maybe its just me.

I have no idea how or why they choose 96, but I would imagine that it is just a middle of the road number. I am 61 and have bifocal glasses, so I did try your 72dpi, and all I can say is ouch :P. The font size is highly individual, and since it is so easily changed, it really makes no difference what the default is.
