install stops after splash and then a message box appears with 'Install' written at top/center, a close 'X' top/right and some sort of icon top/left, perhaps an icon of a disk or box.

It has loaded beyound that point once only, and on previous attempts there was a recurring error message which I'm sorry I do not remember, something to do with network? and a four letter word.

I want to have ubuntu erase all of original c: drive, and install itself only, no ,more windows on the lap top.

Looks like you don't have enough RAM to run the LiveCD. Therefore, download and use the alternate CD to install Ubuntu on your machine then.

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate

Better yet, install Xubuntu instead.

i installed,
Ubuntu 8.10 (the latest version): Includes the latest enhancements and is maintained until 2010,

i ran live also and it ran then bogged down, i also did an 'install'. but your saying this cd is strictly 'live' cd?? i also had an old ubuntu version 5.1 that i got directly from ubuntu that would not install either.

Just try xubuntu as someone already suggested, or get more RAM, I would not bother with less than 512MB personally, though I am aware some have got ubuntu running with less.

Here's some of what it says:

Recommended minimum requirements

Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly.

700 MHz x86 processor
384 MB of system memory (RAM)
8 GB of disk space
Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
