Password Issues When Upgrading Xubuntu

Hi,
Last night I started to upgrade Xubuntu 6.06.1 to 8.04.1 and went to sleep. When I woke up this morning, a screen saver shows and when I move the mouse, I am prompted to login. When I type in my password, it says "Sorry!" in the password field. I went into the terminal and tried to change the password, but the new one doesn't work either. Another thing, in the login prompt, the user name field can not be changed. When I click the field, a cursor doesn't even show up.
Any ideas?

Another thing:
I've did a lot of googling before I posted this and didn't find anything helpful. But I did find out that some people with the same problem tried to reboot and it destroyed their install, so that's probably not a good option.
