Try running the app, and looking in the system tray.

Neat!

EDIT: It seems it became active at midnight - maybe it's not yet midnight for you?

Yeah, I was looking at the one in the notification area, I'll have to check again at midnight.

If there was a dictionary entry for "useless bloat", there would be a picture of the subject of this thread there.

Check the VLC "about" screen ;)

Approx. 10:32 EST here, and no Santa hat (yet).

Will advise if it changes.

Thanks Solitaire, interesting that they'd go to that length for the holiday.

Yeah the like 2 lines of code (No idea how much actual lines, but really it probably COULD be done with just one line in an if statement) needed for this are a perfect example of the bloat of VLC, since they added this it runs really slow and uses up all my RAM.

.. and takes 2 gigs of space on your hard drive for just an icon! Let's boycott it!

I think it's a really nice idea...

Bloat? an if statement and a tiny icon... great, an extra 10 to 15KB... there is many times that bloat present in Ubuntu already, not to mention the inefficient decoders these players use.

...let's boycott it!

Cool, just showed up on mine at 12:30 PM, noon not midnight. :o

I really wouldn't consider this nice easter egg as bloat, as people above me said it's only a few more lines of code plus a small image file.

Why so serious?

Why so serious?

Because I'm not in a good mood at that time of day (or any for that reason).

Anyway, I have many more reasons to not use VLC, but I won't bother boring you with them.

It's complex
It reimplements every codec
It has a awfully large number of options
I don't need it for anything

Anyway, don't let that stop any of you continuing to use it.

I'm surprised no one has gotten offended that there isn't a menorah VLC icon yet. :lolflag:

My Arch Linux has the hat too.

I use only VLC to play movies & music on all distro's & just movies on Leopard.

I love it, it is far more useful & meaningful to me than xmas actually. :P

It's good to give thanks at this time of the year to the wonderful VLC people for creating libdvdcss. :KS

Open-source favoritism?

Or maybe the effect was easier to code in Linux than in Windows or OS X.
