i'm going backwards..
yesyerday, i did an install of ubuntu, no worries. problem was tvtuner card not recognised, so had to do a reinstall of XP to test (worked fine). Later in day, reinstalled ubuntu 8.1 (pentium 4, 1GRAM, 775T MB).
The problem was that after getting a load up screen, I'll get a quick "no signal" as per during a re-boot, but then nothing happens. The computer is running, but the screen black.
I did a few hard re-boots, same.
So I thought, dodgy install, so I'v now re-installed twice. Once direct from CD, once from desktop install from live cd. But now when it reboots, I either get the black screen, or a HAL error. I can get a terminal by pressing alt-f2 during hal error, and have tried reinstalling hal, but still no joy. Also, sudo apt-get update from same terminal fails - for what its worth.
What on earth have I done, it seems too strange that a fresh install wont fix the issue.
