Hey, usually when I format and reinstall Windows I have to spend hours and hours burning dvd's of documents and files. Well it's very time consuming and boring.

I download Ubuntu and am wanting to install it. Now I was wondering if I could do this.

1. Install Ubuntu using the CD.
2. Copy all my files over? Like Windows Desktop files?
3. Uninstall Windows (is this possible? I always format)

Would Ubuntu run quick this way or would formatting and starting clean be the best way?

If you know how to partition a disk you could theoretically do this:

Shrink your Windows partition
Create a new partition
Move all your files to the new partition
Install Ubuntu over top of the Windows partition only
Move your files back over to the Ubuntu partition
Remove the partition so Ubuntu uses the whole drive

It could be safe to install Ubuntu on a seperate Hard Disk if possible.
