new 8.10 install grub error 21 problem

ive tried looking up other threads and due to my serious lack of linux skill i can not fully understand what i need to do or how i need to get from A to B .

i have/had a windows vista install with 2x1Tb drives in a motherboard raid 0 setup. I then had a spare sata 250gb drive that i chose to install ubuntu onto. when it rebooted after install it just booted to an error 21. I have tried changing boot orders and disabling drives in bios etc, but no luck. i now have 2 operating systems that just dont appear to do anything. i have managed to get some info from the live cd which im hoping will give someone an idea of what i need to change, and if i can do it from the live cd?

Can you set your BIOS to boot the sdc drive on start up? If so, the solution to your problem could be really simple. If you can set your BIOS to boot the sdc drive, then you can install Grub to the MBR of sdc so that it is bootable, and you should be able to boot into Ubuntu without any more Grub errors. How about booting your Live CD, open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and do:

sudo grub
grub> root (hd2,0)
grub> setup (hd2)
grub> quit
That will install Grub to the MBR of your sdc drive so that it is bootable, and then to restore a Windows MBR to your Vista drive, do:

sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr
Then reboot, set your BIOS to boot the sdc drive, and you should get the Grub menu and be able to boot Ubuntu. See if you can get that far, and then I can help you boot Windows from the Grub menu. Let me know how it goes or if you run into problems.

Mindas22, in order to get a clearer picture of your setup, how about opening a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and do:

cd ~/Desktop && wget 'http://home.comcast.net/~ubuntu_grub/boot_info_script.txt' && sudo bash boot_info_script.txt
That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of that file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound sign # graphic in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it. The results of that script will help clarify your setup and hopefully what your problem might be.

Since it's not entirely clear which drive you are booting on start up, how about trying this to boot Vista:

That should work if you are booting the sdc Ubuntu drive on start up; your Vista boot files are actually in sdc1 since you installed Vista to sdc5, a logical partition, so you need to boot sdc1, not sdc5. Since it's not entirely clear which drive you are booting on start up, how about trying this to boot Vista:

That should work if you are booting the sdc Ubuntu drive on start up; your Vista boot files are actually in sdc1 since you installed Vista to sdc5, a logical partition, so you need to boot sdc1, not sdc5. Let me know exactly what happens when you try the above entry from the Grub menu, and we can work from there.

I ran the script that shows all the volume info and grub location and am having issues with Grub error 21 as well.

Please let me know from my setup - 1 80G SATA with Windows XP on it and 2 160G mirrored SATAs with 2 unrelated IDE drives (82G each) with Ubuntu installed in a partition on the last drive. Following the previous example I was unable to make sense out of the naming convention in HD2, 0 in the grub utility.

So are you getting the Grub error 21 before seeing a Grub menu? If so, I think the best solution would be to install Grub to your Ubuntu sde drive, but to make that work you will need to change your BIOS to boot the Ubuntu sde drive--can you do that? If you can, how about doing:

sudo grub
grub> device (hd0) /dev/sde
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> makeactive
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
Then reboot, set your BIOS to boot the Ubuntu drive, and let me know exactly what happens. We can work from there.

Thank you for the help. Now Ubuntu boots and I get to the boot select screen for the OS. Ubuntu boots from the first selection in generic mode, but I have 2 Windows selections and neither one works. Now what ? I would really like to understand this all after it works (after getting dual boot to work)

On a side note, I am using an Nvidia HW RAID controller on the Mobo and Ubuntu is seeing each drive as a separate drive.

OK, how about first opening your menu.lst:

gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
And replace the two Windows entries at the end of the file with:

Thanks again. The second entry worked fine. Can I delete the first entry so it is off the list seeing as it the wrong drive I am guessing yes.

Second, my 160G drive is actually an Nvidia RAID mirror array and not 2 drives. I have not even mounted one of the drives in Ubuntu for fear of screwing up the RAID.

Any recommendations for how to get Ubuntu to see the drive as 1 logical volume not 2 HW volumes ?

Glad to hear one of those entries worked OK, and yes, you can delete the other one. About your RAID mirror, I don't have much experience with RAID, but if I were you I would install "mdadm" and check the documentation. I believe that's the package that will allow you to set up your RAID mirror correctly in Ubuntu. Good luck and let me know how it goes. :)
