Hi,
This is my first Ubuntu (attempted) install, so I have no idea how anything works (yet)!
When I put my Ubuntu Desktop 8.10 CD in the drive, I get a message:

<some digits> BIOS age (1999) fails cutoff (2000) acpi=force is required to anable ACPI.
But then it goes to the Ubuntu install menu. I try the Check for Errors option and it just restarts after checking, with no messages so I think that means no errors. I choose Install Ubuntu and I get a brown textured screen with a blank window in the middle, when it jams. Any help, ASAP, please?
Thanks,

ok um...... when you get to the install screen press f6 and add acpi=off maybe that will work for you

Nope, not working, but thanks.
Any more possibilities?

Sounds more like a graphics issue, not an acpi one. Which video card do you have? My guess is that you are installing on some old pentium II or III. If that's the case then the warning is normal, I get it all the time. In this case you should be using Xubuntu (less resources). Try the alt install cd, it's more friendly.
