It's that time of year again, and after loosening the purse strings to buy my family gifts, I have decided to treat myself to an MP3 Player.

So what experience have you lot all had with MP3 players and Ubuntu? I was thinking of getting the iAudio X5 as it supports OGG and works with Linux, but im open to ideas...

I hate this problem... I love my iPod but wish i could use it with Ubuntu as i do have a dual boot system... Why Apple wont offer Linux support, i'm not 100% sure of, but i don't like it...

You don't need Apple to offer Linux support. It is entirely possible to use the iPod itself under Linux using the gtkpod application to load MP3s onto the device. The only thing you can't do under Linux is run iTunes or access their music store, though there's a certain russian site (which I will not name on this site because what's legal in Russia isn't necessarily legal anywhere else) that allows you to buy mp3s and download them. If you want, I can tell you what you have to do to use the iPod under Linux, since I have an iPod Shuffle and use it in Ubuntu all the time.

I bought my wife the iAudio U2 this past August and she loves it--Ubuntu user as well. The sound quality is some of the best I have heard and the player is well designed and fairly intuitive. Being UMS compliant is a big bonus. We also own a Creative Zen 6GB--hers as well--which is a good player but the non-UMS part irks me, though Gnomad2 works just fine, and an iRiver H320--mine-- which is UMS compliant and sports very good sound quality. Too bad iRiver dropped UMS compliance on the US players with there latest offerings.

Doesn't Amarok support iPods too? I know there is a drawing of one on the splash page...

Dr Moxie, what is UMS?

I have a Creative Zen Xtra, and I really liked it for a long time, even when I tried it in Ubuntu. But lately Gnomad2 and my Zen have been fighting and I can't even get Gnomad2 to open let alone transfer MP3s. I think the problem is more Gnomad2 than the Zen, but at one point they worked fine together.

Dr Moxie, what is UMS?

USB Mass Storage. It's a standard that allows compliant devices to be mounted as generic hard drives. Linux mounts UMS devices as SCSI drives. There's more information here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_mass_storage_device_class)

I've got an iPod mini (green for what it's worth ) and gtkpod works fine. As for the iTune store there is always sharpmusique - SharpMusique on Ubuntu (http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=PCjC5HQ1hhM&search=macewan)

Thanks! I figured that's what it was, just never heard it called that and I'm too lazy for Google right now :)

I wish Creative players were treated like UMS devices.

Does anyone know if the new iPod with Video is supported by Gtkpod?

It might be too recent. I'd recommend emailing the developer and asking him directly.

Hi,

in this thread:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=572697

I posted a short overview of the OGG/MP3 player Linux-test of the German magazine LinuxUser 12/2005.

Recommendations: Cowon iAudio X5 or M5 - both work fine, firmware can be upgraded in Linux, they have MP3, OGG and FLAC support and even have good sound quality.

Cheers
