Okay, this is really weird.

In most apps the initial size of the window is very condensed in the width. Please see the attached images. This happens in Firefox and Nautilus even if I resize the window, close the app and restart the app. It will also happen if most alert boxes open in Firefox.

Strangely it does not happen in Nautilus.

Is there a way to set a default window size for Ubuntu Apps?

My setup:
Dell Inspiron 1501 with Windows Vista 32 bit and Wubi 64 bit Install of Ubuntu 8.10.
Problem persists in both laptop monitor and when connected to external monitor.

This obviously is not a show stopper but it is very annoying. I will try any suggestions as long as you explain it slowly to my noob brain.

Not sure what you are saying in the title of the post, but are you Opening Firefox in a Terminal??? and why???

Try opening Firefox in Safe mode, from a Terminal: firefox -safe-mode and see what happens, if it doesn't look right resize then shut down and then run Firefox from Applications > Internet or from the Firefox Icon in the top panel...
