Hi,
To cut a long story short I dual booted my laptop (Vista then Ubuntu) and tried to do the same for my parents XP desktop. Now things have gone so very wrong.
I'm n damage limitation mode now, I've removed Ubuntu and now trying to get the Windows data off to save them redoing work (home business).
My problem is that when I use Ubuntu live CD, no files are found on the drive. When I use Knoppix, it finds files and folders but the names are just a random bunch of numbers and symbols. Does this mean the data is all corrupted and unrecoverable??

Many Thanks

Dre

Try using photorec. You'll still end up with a bunch of files with random names, but at least you'll probably get all the important files back.

Here's a step-by-step guide with screenshots:

Great, thanks. I think it's working a treat :-)
Hopefully it will recognize extensions like Microsoft money and quickbooks.
Only 6 hours to completion!!
Will post how it goes. Thanks again
