What would be the ultimate Linux distribution?
Which applications should be included? (You can make something up)
Which desktop should it use, IE: GNOME or Openbox

Enything else? Use your imagination...

Arch already allows you to do this, so I'm going to say Arch Linux.

... the one you are currently thinking of switching to.

Arch. Allows you to build your own, nothing is decided for you and it's rolling release so stays up to date.

The "ultimate distribution" doesn't come with applications you'll never use.

Arch Linux

The ultimate Linux distro has in-built controls for a dynomorphic generator, chameleon circuit, etc...

A commercially backed Debian derivative with a predictable release schedule, recent packages, and an emphasis on ease of use & sane defaults.

I'd say they should go with a theme color different than blue, we've seen like hundreds of those. ;)

The ultimate linux distro?

It has to include: nothing.

Like Arch and others, you install what you like after installation.

--

But to play along, it would have to include anything I install on my system.

Gnome (without all the unneeded things in it like ekiga, gnome-screensavers, orca, ...)

Apps included:

- File-roller with support for rar, 7z, zip, tar, ...
- gnome-terminal
- deluge torrent client
- firefox (with the plugins like flash and java)
- exaile audio player with all the neccesary codecs
- totem video player with all the neccesary codecs
- gparted
- xchat (irc chat client)
- emesene (msn messenger client)
- gimp

That's it.

Oh and metacity compositing should be enabled by default.

Gentoo has succeeded in doing this for me already.
