I'm thinking of trying out Ubuntu with the minimal 10MB ISO and installing my own customized KDE on it, with just the core package and adding all the other small bells and whistles by hand. My goal is to have an installation of Ubuntu running with the fat trimmed off, so that it'll hopefully go a bit faster and will tailor itself a bit better to my own personal specifications.

Has anyone tried anything like this, and if so, did you get any noticeable speed improvement out of it? Is it comparable with Arch in terms of simplicity?

I tried it briefly, though I got fed up of apt-get installing everything and decided to install xubuntu-desktop ;)

But it is very simple, because you just need to apt-get install whatever it is you want to install :)

yes its very easy, just install it, then xorg, whatever else you need, usually you don't have to configure much, like getting internet setup so its pretty easy to do, and you do notice a speed performance a bit
