I installed 8.10 on a old computer and when it boots up it says

The display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds. It is likely that something bad is going on. Waiting for 2 minutes before trying again on display :0.

then is says OK

but it was running windows XP Professional before fine other then the internet and it was a second hand computer my friend bought and I told him Ubuntu linux was better but i can't get it to work yet if I install freespire 2.0 it works fine or Ubuntu 7.04 but I would like to try on this system 8.10 his computer is a HP Pavilian XE813 or XE8I3 or XE8l3 any ways I also addded ram it has a 128 Meg that came with it and a 256 meg that I put in..

I have tried after I posted this Puppy Linux and Frespire 2.0 they both work and have no problems but I can't get Ubuntu 8.10 to work on this system and after it says the message above that I mentioned if I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL it says stoping GRUB display manager...
